The chicks had their first free range experience the other day. They met Meg, who was promptly pecked on the nose and now avoids chickens, and ventured out for a little walk outside the coop.
At least they're likely to survive the herding - it's the affection I'm more concerned about. There tends to be a lot of shaking of loved objects. So far, under reasonably close supervision we haven't noticed much more than ordinary (as opposed to Border Collie obsessive) curiousity and a healthy wariness. And yes, some concern when the whole flock isn't neatly arranged.
I'm glad the chickens made things clear with Meg, as I don't think they would appreciate her herding attempts.
